When a student becomes ill or is injured at school, the school (secretary or principal) shall attempt to notify the student's parents as soon as possible. It is the responsibility of the classroom teacher, teacher’s associate or other staff to communicate with the office.
The school, while not responsible for medical treatment of an ill or injured student, will have employees present administer emergency or minor first aid if possible. An ill or injured child will be turned over to the care of the parents or qualified medical employees as quickly as possible.
Annually, parents shall be required to complete a medical emergency authorization form indicating the procedures to be followed, if possible, in an emergency involving their child. The authorization form will also include the phone numbers of the parents and alternative numbers to call in case of an injury or illness.
The principal shall be responsible, in conjunction with the secretary/school nurse, to develop rules and regulations governing the procedure in the event a student should become ill or be injured at school.
School District Enrollment and Class Size Policy
Class size determinations shall be reviewed annually by the principal to ensure optimal learning environments. The principal shall provide recommendations regarding class sizes based on district financial resources, staff qualifications, staffing levels, and other pertinent factors. The district commits to maintaining pupil-teacher ratios that support both educational effectiveness and fiscal responsibility. These ratios will be evaluated yearly, taking into consideration all factors that impact academic opportunities and achievement. The implementation of class size guidelines will reflect a balanced approach between educational best practices and available resources.
Student Attendance, Absenteeism, and Truancy Policy The Sacred Heart School Board establishes this comprehensive policy to address student attendance, chronic absenteeism, and truancy. This policy aims to promote regular school attendance, which is fundamental to student academic success and overall development. The district recognizes that consistent in-person attendance creates optimal learning opportunities and enhances student engagement in their educational journey.
Definitions and Thresholds Chronic absenteeism is defined as absences exceeding ten percent (10%) of scheduled school days within a trimester for elementary students. These absences may be excused or unexcused. Students who are absent without a reasonable excuse, as determined by the principal, will be assigned to appropriate disciplinary sanction. (Please use the student handbook for a list of excused/unexcused absences).
Truancy is characterized by unauthorized absences amounting to twenty percent (20%) or more of scheduled school days within a trimester for elementary students, which represents a more severe attendance concern requiring immediate intervention.
Intervention Protocol When attendance concerns arise, the school will implement a tiered intervention approach. Initial steps include parent notification of attendance concerns (7 days) then a required meeting with school administration to develop an Absenteeism Prevention Plan (10 days). For cases of truancy, the district reserves the right to engage with the county attorney for legal intervention or be brought to the Sacred Heart Disciplinary Board.
